John S. Mendoza, was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a devout Catholic his entire life. He was a family man. He passed away on July 13, 2020 at the age of 76 due to complications related to COVID-19.
While he lived, worked and raised his kids in Abilene, he spent his retirement with his wife, Delia, helping to take care of his great grandchildren in Fort Worth. As a Catholic, he took pride in knowing that his grandchildren received a Catholic School education at St. George Catholic School. It was there that he immersed himself in all the activities of his grandchildren as caregiver, coach, chauffeur, fundraiser and school volunteer. Many years later as a retiree, he was able to more directly support the school while one of his great-grandchildren, Jacob Jasso, started and continues to attend. His other great-grandson, Beau Jasso attends St. John the Apostle Catholic school in the same area.
John was always willing to help at Church and school. He volunteered for school fundraisers, helped chaperone school field trips, and often acted as a handy-man to repair or help improve the schools structure. Because of his work at St. George and the importance he placed on a Catholic school education for this own grandchildren, the family thought it would be fitting to establish an endowment at St. George in his memory to help other children receive a Catholic school education.
